The context
A six-storey residential building put up in the early 1970s, with an uninsulated envelope, a roof at the end of its life and an oil-fired boiler due for replacement. High consumption, rising bills, and a residents’ meeting that wanted to intervene once rather than in instalments.
The work
Thermal insulation applied across the whole heat-loss surface, correcting thermal bridges at balconies and window reveals. Complete replacement of the roof build-up with new waterproofing and insulation. Replacement of the boiler plant and installation of thermostatic valves with heat metering.
Running the site
The building remained occupied throughout. Scaffolding was erected on successive sections of the block, always keeping at least one protected pedestrian access open and giving weeks of notice before any phase that interrupted a service.
